The Great Hurricane of 1780 has killed 20,000–30,000 souls in the Caribbean, the deadliest storm yet known to these seas. Vessels have foundered without number; coastal towns lie in ruin from Barbados to Jamaica. The toll among sailors and islanders alike defies full accounting. Ships that rode out the gale report masts snapped like kindling and decks swept clean. The hurricane struck without warning in mid-October, when the fleet season brings the most traffic.

The defeat preserves the kingdom of the Franks and the northern realms from Saracen dominion.
The advance of Islamic rule into the heart of Europe has been broken on the field near Tours, France, where Charles Martel's forces defeat an Umayyad army. The battle, fought in the year 732, secures the lands north of the Pyrenees against further conquest. For a generation, Arab cavalry have swept through Iberia and pressed toward the rich territories of Gaul. Martel, the Frankish mayor of the palace, drew his infantry into a solid wall that withstood repeated charges. The Umayyad host, laden with plunder, could not break the line and withdrew toward the south by nightfall.

1970 — Fiji Raises Its Own Flag as Britain Ends 96 Years of Rule
Prince Charles presides at independence ceremony in Suva as dominion status begins.
Prince Charles watched the Union Jack descend and Fiji's new blue banner rise over Albert Park in Suva this morning, closing a colonial chapter that began in 1874.
The 20-year-old heir to the British throne handed constitutional documents to Chief Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, making Fiji the world's smallest independent state. Some 96 years after cession to Queen Victoria, the 300-island archipelago of 515,000 people assumes dominion status within the Commonwealth.
Mara, who has led Fiji's government since 1967, takes office as prime minister of a nation where ethnic Fijians outnumber descendants of Indian laborers brought by the British. The sugar-based economy and strategic Pacific location had delayed London's approval of full independence.
